Milking

milking our cows

We milk our cows three times each day using a Delaval Double 12 parallel milking parlor. This parlor arrangement allows us to milk 24 cows at a time while maintaining operator efficiency and cow comfort.  As the cows enter the parlor, they walk in an alley to the farthest point of the parlor. Each cow is able to turn gently towards the outside as a gate closes to comfortably contain them and protect them from the other cows walking in. It takes just a few minutes for 12 cows to file in, turn, and be ready for milking.

Each cow has their udder dipped in an iodine solution and wiped with a new, clean towel. When 6 cows have been cleaned, the milking units are attached and the milking begins.  Milk from each cow is measured as it travels from the cow, down below the floor of the parlor and to a cooling plate which begins the process of cooling the milk from 100 degrees Fahrenheit down to 37 degrees.  As part of our commitment to environmental stewardship, we use the plate cooler to cool the milk as much as possible without using electricity.  Finally, the milk ends up in our bulk tank where it is cooled the final time and stored at 37 degrees until it is transported to Superior Dairy in Canton, Ohio for processing into many different milk products.
